Summary
Summer appointments have beginning and end dates, which generally fall between the end of the academic year and the beginning of the fall semester and are only available for persons whose primary appointments are for nine (9) months.
Policy
Per Collected Rules and Regulations (CRR) 360.020: Summer Appointments and Consultation (Amended Bd. Min. 12-10-10):
- Summer Appointments for Nine-Month Appointees
- For faculty on nine-month appointments, compensation for summer appointments may not exceed one-third of nine-month salary.
- Consultation
- Consultation is a significant means of professional improvement and a form of community service. Time spent in consultation shall not interfere with regular duties. It is the policy of the University to permit consulting activities which:
- Are directly related to the professional interest and improvement of the faculty member.
- Are in the best interest of the University.
- Do not constitute a conflict of interest.
- Each division shall make an annual report to the Chancellor, vice president or other appropriate administrative officer indicating the aggregate time and compensation for each individual involved. Chancellor and vice presidents shall annually transmit these reports to the president.

Additional HR-216 policy provisions below in accordance with CRR 360.020:
- Approval
- All recommendations for summer appointments must be approved by the chancellor, vice president or designee.
- Summer appointments, involving two (or more) departments, require signature approval from all departments involved.
- All recommendations must be submitted in advance to permit time for review and approval.
- Procedure Information
- Faculty on Fully Benefit Eligible Academic, nine (9)-month appointments who have responsibilities in the summer are appointed on “Additional Pay” forms utilizing appropriate summer earn codes located in the Earnings Code Table, available from the campus Payroll Office.
- Appointments coded as summer period earned during summer months count as creditable earnings under the defined benefit plan for the University Retirement Program up to a maximum of 3/9 of nine (9)-month salary.
