Beginning May 2019, the University will migrate faculty, staff, student and certain retiree user accounts to a single user domain for accessing university applications. This will allow a single method of identification for all application users, reduce complexity in information systems, increase security and help enhance collaboration systemwide.
University-specific information
We understand how important the technological infrastructure is to completing much of the day-to-day business of the University of Missouri System. Each university within the UM System will follow its own timeline to migrate groups of user accounts in batches in order to minimize disruption. Faculty and staff
This summer, Information Technology offices across the UM System will move user accounts for faculty, staff and students from the UMC-Users, TIGERS; UMKC-USERS; MST-USERS; UMSL-USERS; and UM-USERS domain(s) to a new single domain used systemwide: UM-AD.
This transition will change some of the steps for logging in to some University applications, like webmail and your University workstation.
Domain name change
Instead of specifying a domain when logging in (like UMC-Users, TIGERS; UMKC-USERS; MST-USERS; UMSL-USERS; or UM-USERS), all users will use specify the same domain (where needed): UM-AD.
Employees hired after May 6, 2019, will be added to the UM-AD domain by default.
User Principal Name (UPN)
The biggest change will be that log in information is not tied to email address. All users are assigned a User Principal Name, a core username that will remain the same throughout one's time with the UM System.
Because of this, once moved to UM-AD, any time a University log in requires “username@something.edu”, users will always use “@umsystem.edu”, no matter which part of UM System one may attend classes or work.
For example, user Sam A. Doe may have a UPN of "sadnzf", and would log in to applications using either "sadnzf" or "sadnzf@umsystem.edu".
Current faculty and staff: For many current students and employees, the UPN will be grandfathered to be the same as your current user name.
New employees: Those hired after January 1, 2019, use a "hash ID" format for their UPN. The hash ID uses a formula to generate a string of letters that are unique to that employee.
Email address
Even through the UPN changes how to log in, your email address will not change. Senders can still direct emails to username@missouri.edu; username@umkc.edu; username@mst.edu; and username@umsl.edu. Using a UPN structure will allow users to more easily change their email address in the event of a name change; see the FAQs below for more information.
To help illustrate, if user Sam A. Doe was an employee of UMKC, their email address could be "DoeSA@umkc.edu". If they later took a job with MU Extension, their email could be "DoeSA@missouri.edu". If they were to take their spouse's last name of "Smith", their email could be "SmithSA@missouri.edu". Throughout this time, Sam would always log in to their webmail using the same credentials: their UPN ("sadnzf" or "sadnzf@umsystem.edu", where applicable) and password.
Students
Each university within the UM System follows its own timeline for migrating user accounts. The date of your student account migration may be different depending on whether you are enrolled in a summer course, and when that summer course occurs. Your local Information Technology office will reach out with additional detail as it applies to your account. Consult your local IT office with any questions.
This transition will change some of the steps for logging in to some University applications, like webmail and your University workstation:
- Instead of specifying a domain when logging in (like TIGERS; UMKC-USERS; MST-USERS; UMSL-USERS; etc.), all users will use specify the same domain (where needed): UM-AD.
- Almost always, when a University log in requires “university@something.edu”, you will always use “@umsystem.edu”, no matter where you attend classes.
- Microsoft Office 365 is not yet configured this way, however, and will still require your email address.
- Your email will remain the same, using @mail.missouri.edu; @mail.umkc.edu; @mst.edu; or @umsl.edu.
Retirees
Retirees who still use a university email address will have their accounts migrated at the same time as faculty and staff. Once their account has migrated to the new domain, these retirees should specify "UM-AD" as their domain where appropriate.
Other retirees should not experience a change in log in procedure.

If I create a personalized email address, what do I use to log in to applications?
In most cases you will login with either 1) just your username, 2) your domain and username or 3) your User Principal Name (UPN) which is your username@domain.edu.
Application | Login value | Example (for employee Sam A. Doe) |
---|---|---|
Applications behind Shibboleth (like Box) |
Username (and password) | sadnzf (and password) |
Applications behind SecureAuth (like myHR) |
Username (and password) | sadnzf (and password) |
Webmail | Domain/Username (and password) OR username@domain.edu (and password) |
UM-AD\sadnzf (and password) |
VPN | Username (and password) | sadnzf (and password) |
Workstations |
Username (and password) |
sadnzf (and password) |
What is a "hash ID"?
Any employee hired on or after January 1, 2019, receives a “hash based” username, similar to what students receive. This hash ID will not be changed and remain regardless of any name or role changes during the person's time with the UM System. Instead, additional name-based email addresses will be allowed on the user’s mailbox.
Who can have a name-based email address?
Any active or new hire employee and any currently enrolled student may obtain a personalized email address. To obtain a personalized address go to accounts.umsystem.edu, login and choose “Personalize Email”. (Note: Students who have asserted FERPA will not be allowed to personalize their email address).
How many personalized email addresses can someone have?
A user may have one name-based email address. If a change in business units/campuses occur, the new campus domain will be available with the same name-based prefix. i.e. someone with first.last@umkc.edu becomes a MU employee, they can add first.last@missouri.edu.
Can I change my personalized address after I choose one?
Generally no, unless a legal name change has occurred. Once a legal name change has been updated in PeopleSoft, the individual may contact the Help Desk and they can allow an additional email address to be chosen based on the updated name.
Are hospital employees included as part of this migration?
Most hospital employees are excluded from the migration at this time.
