 This Month: Recognition

Thank you for your service over the last 12 months! We are so glad you’re here.

As you near your one-year service anniversary, we want to focus our final message on something relevant for all employees: the power of recognition. Recognition can positively impact how we view our jobs, how well we perform and the overall culture of the University. To positively impact a colleague’s work-life today, we encourage you to practice recognizing them. Consider these tips:

  • Personalize your recognition. Building relationships with your coworkers will help you understand how they like to be recognized. For example, some people enjoy public recognition while others appreciate one-on-one appreciation.
  • Get creative. Recognition doesn’t need to cost anything. Sometimes a short visit, a kind phone call or an email copying that person’s supervisor is all it takes to make a colleague feel valued.
  • Be specific. Provide details to the person on why what they did was so great.

Whether the recognition is simple or elaborate, it will have a positive impact on others’ experiences at work.

If you are a supervisor, check on this tips sheet for recognizing your employees' contributions

For Supervisors

You work in a safe, inclusive, transparent environment.

As you move forward in your professional life at the University, practicing empathy can help you build an environment where others feel valued and included. According to Six Habits of Highly Empathic People, “empathy means 'feeling with' another person. Put another way, empathy is the ability to step into the shoes of another person, aiming to understand their feelings and perspectives, and to use that understanding to guide our actions. In this way, empathy is a key ingredient of successful relationships because it helps us understand the perspectives, needs, and intentions of others.”

When we treat someone with empathy, we imbue them with dignity. While we can never really know what it feels like to walk in another person's shoes, we can still see them as a whole person worthy of respect. To get a better understanding of what empathy is and why it’s important, take a look at this video animation about empathy.
