Purpose

For most of the first 20 years of the UM/UWC partnership, the UMSAEP focused on faculty exchanges. Beginning in 2001, however, the UMSAEP committee created the Henry Mitchell Scholarship to provide opportunities for UM and UWC students to study at their partner institution, and other resources have since become available.  Hundreds of UM students have participated in lifechanging UM faculty led study abroad programs in Cape Town as a result.

For UWC students, the Henry Mitchell Scholarship, the Ivan Rugema Fellowship and the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine summer research internship have afforded them incredibly enriching experiences.

Scholarships and Fellowships

Henry Mitchell Scholarship 

Named in 2001 to honor a former UMSAEP committee chair and beloved University of Missouri-Kansas City faculty member, this scholarship may be awarded annually to deserving UM and UWC students. The University of Missouri South African Education Program (UMSAEP) Committee may award the Henry Mitchell Scholarship to up to four UM System students. The scholarship provides $2,000 for study at the University of the Western Cape. Also, up to two University of the Western Cape students may receive a scholarship for study at any campus of the University of Missouri System.

Ivan Rugema Fellowship

The Ivan Rugema Fellowship, named after an exceptional UWC LL.M. graduate, supports UWC law students who wish to study at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law. Learn more about the history of the fellowship... 

International Summer Research Internship

The Office of the Research Dean at the University of Missouri School of Medicine coordinates a summer research program with the objective of recruiting students from the University of Western Cape. The program runs for nine weeks (this year, Wednesday, May 31, 2017 – Friday, July 28, 2017). Ten UWC students have participated in this program since it began in 2012, with two additional students attending this year. Learn more about the program...
