The patient medical charts of deceased minor and adult patients (death charts) are used by a variety of University Health Care departments for medical research purposes. The records provide researchers with information over extensive periods of time over a large variety of individuals.
Authorized Retention:
Retain paper records for ten (10) years after the year of death, then destroy.
**Example, A patient dies in 1996. The patient’s chart is eligible for destruction on 12/31/2007.
Electronic medical records will be retained until destruction of death charts is authorized by University Medical Records Department management.
NOTE: This retention authorization was updated from permanent to 10 years for paper records only
